Our Newsletter
Wisteria Patchwork's January 2015 newsletter.
Dear Quilter,
This is my January newsletter letting you know what is going on at Wisteria Patchwork and to remind you that we are still going strong!!
My website has not been updated for some time and I blame the webmaster (usually known as dear husband) for this. He says he is usually to blame for most things so has accepted my claim. It will be updated as soon as we can remember where the software is for doing so!!! [Done, software found. Excuses expired! Reg.]
Despite this lapse we are still beavering away selling fabric and teaching patchwork. Do come and see what we have and you will be delighted at our range of fabrics, waddings and notions. I believe we have the best selection for miles. We have a great range of fabrics at very competitive prices. If you haven't been before then you're in for a real treat, if you haven't visited for a while then call in to refresh your memory and see what's new!  We are open from 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am to 1pm on Saturdays.
I run regular monthly classes here at Wisteria Patchwork, with members of the various classes meeting once a month to work on group or individual projects. These classes are usually full but occasionally I have spaces on specific days for an experienced quilter rather than a beginner. This season I have two spaces available on the class that meets on the second Tuesday of each month. You don't have to be madly experienced so  if you know your way around a cutting mat and a sewing machine but would like to expand your knowledge and have missed sewing in a group, then this could be your opportunity to join and learn more. If you are able to commit to a regular class once a month on the second Tuesday then please get in touch. Email me at lynne@quiltingontheweb.com or phone on 01522 868228 (if I'm working then please leave a message on the answerphone).
Once a week I run a hand applique class on a Wednesday and I currently have two spaces on the class that meets on the first Wednesday of the month. This class is suitable for beginners or experienced hand sewers alike so don't be shy if you want to join us! There are at least six or seven projects that you could choose to start at this class. They range from whole quilts to wall hangings or table runners, the choice would be yours. If you have always wanted to do a hand stitched project then let me guide you through the process at this class. Get in touch by email or phone and I will explain more and show you the projects.
My classes cost £25 per class and regular monthly classes are paid for "termly" in advance typically there are 3 or 4 classes per term. You bring your own fabrics and sewing machine as required.
This month sees the start of my latest Sampler quilt course. This very successful course has run unchanged for almost eighteen years, so I must be doing something right!! I have places available on the course which is aimed at beginners or people with a little knowledge who would like to know more. Sometimes I have found that a self taught quilter will benefit from working with a group and exploring different methods of doing things. Whatever your skill level there will always be something new to learn on this course. Over the twelve months of the course I will show you as many different patchwork techniques as I can fit in. During this time you will make a beautifully co-ordinated twenty five block sampler quilt in colours and fabrics of your choice.
The Sampler quilt course this season will be run on the third Tuesday of the month and will begin on Tuesday 20th January 2015.  The cost of the course is £25 per session paid "termly" in advance. In addition you will need to provide your own fabrics and sewing machines and lunch! If you can commit to a one year course and have always wanted to start a quilt but don't know where to begin then this is the course for you. Please contact me as soon as possible so that I can send further details to you. Contact me as usual by email or phone. Remember there is an answerphone on all the time as there is no phone in the shop. If you leave a message I will ring you back.
In addition to learning more, every member of my regular monthly classes is entitled to 10% off of their purchases in the shop, each time they shop. As they say every little bit helps...
Many of you have been on one of my patchwork retreat weekends. I have arranged another four of these in 2015 and the details are below. I have run the retreats for eight years at the Humber Royal Hotel at Great Coates near Grimsby and they are exceptional value. Starting on Friday afternoon and running until Sunday teatime you are able to sew to your heart's content without anyone interrupting you! What bliss. Everyone who books is allocated single occupancy of a large en-suite room at no additional cost. Rooms have balconies and overlook the golf course and so have great views. Three course evening meals, full breakfasts, buffet lunches and tuition are included in the price. This year the cost of a weekend is £215 per person fully residential or £120 per person non residential.  The dates for 2015 are 20th to 22nd February, 10th to 12th April, 5th to 7th June and 13th to 15th November. For further details please get in touch. To book please phone the Humber Royal Hotel on 01472 240024 and reserve your place. Easy!
Once a year I go to Spain to run a week's residential course in a private house situated just south of Valencia. I have done this for the past eight years. I know that some of you will think this is a hardship but someone has to do it!!
This year I will be running a patchwork holiday retreat from 10th to 17th May and there are limited places left. This is a full board  week where you can relax and sew. The house has a swimming pool and is in a residential Spanish speaking, rural village high up in the mountains near the coast. With flights, transfers, use of sewing machines and other equipment and tuition included in the price you can kick back, relax and get on with your sewing break. For further details about the holiday either email or phone me.
January is sale month and this year my annual sale will take place on Thursday 29th January, Friday 30th January and Saturday 31st January. Thursday and Friday's opening hours are as normal, 10am to 4pm, but on Saturday we will be open from 10am until 2pm. There will be 20% off of Christmas fabrics and kits, 20% off of brushed cottons and plaids and many fabric bolts reduced to £6 per metre. Panels and wall hangings will be reduced on an individual basis. Why not come in and bag a bargain? As we are so busy on sale days we will not be cutting any wadding on those days, however you can order and pay for your wadding at sale prices and we will cut and bag the wadding for you to collect after the sale.
Speaking of wadding did you know that not only do we sell several types of polyester wadding but we also stock 100% cotton wadding, cotton and polyester mixes, linen/flax mix, bamboo/cotton mix, wool and soy protein wadding? Did you know we stock white, cream and two types of black wadding? Well you do now! We are full of surprises.
Looking for a speaker or teacher for your patchwork (or other) group? Please remember that as a professional speaker and tutor I could talk to your group or run a one day workshop. I take my antique quilt collection to many groups, not all of them patchwork or quilting groups. I regularly teach workshops around the country as well as around the County and I can teach a technique or project, or customise a specific project, for you. Just discuss your requirements and dates with me.
I rarely have space in my diary for one day workshops and I am often asked if I can run a beginner's one day workshop, I am pleased to say that this month I can! If you would like to learn the basics and make a small cushion as an introduction to patchwork then book onto my workshop on Friday 23rd January. The workshop will run from 10am to 4pm and will cost £25. You can make this cushion by hand or using your sewing machine, with rotary cutting equipment or using scissors. To make a start in patchwork, as you always promised yourself you would, please email, phone or come into the shop right now to book your place.
On Tuesday 27th January I will be holding a Hunter's Star one day workshop. If you haven't tried this particular block you may be intrigued enough to give it a go. This is not a beginner's piece and you should be confident with rotary cutting and your sewing machine to get the best out of this day. This block has been around for many years but has always been made using templates and hand sewing. I have redesigned the block for rotary cutting and machine sewing without loosing any of it's original appeal. The class will run from 10am to 4pm and cost £25 per person. You will need to bring your own fabrics and equipment. A full requirements list will be sent on booking. You can book your place by phoning, email or in person in the shop.
All classes are restricted to eight people per workshop to ensure you get individual attention.
On Thursday 19th February 2015 I will be running a Braided bag workshop. From 10am to 4pm you will be making a medium size bag with two French Braid panels, two strips of patterned fabric, with long straps. It is  ideal for patchwork projects as well as shopping! Rotary cut, and machine made and quilted this is a bag for all seasons. You could use one of our Jelly Baby kits of coordinated batik fabrics for this project, we have plenty in the shop in some fabulous colors. The day costs £25 per person. To book either email, phone or call into the shop.
On Wednesday 25th February I have a workshop on traditional needle turned hand applique. If you haven't tried this method before and don't know whether it is for you why not try this taster class? We will start a Folk Art style block with hearts and flowers for this beginner's piece. The workshop will be run from 10am until 4pm and costs £25 per person. Book in the usual manner by email, phone or in person.
On Thursday 26th February I will be running a workshop on King's Cross quilt. This unusual block is made using squares from a Layer Cake, which is a pack of coordinating 10" squares. Slice up the squares and reassemble them into this pretty, scrappy design. Suitable for all levels of sewer. Why not buy your Layer Cake in our sale and join in the fun on this workshop? From 10am to 4pm. £25 per person.
Full payment is required on booking for all classes. A requirements list will be sent to you once payment is made.
